DoE funded Quantum Science Center
The Ma lab is now part of the Quantum Science Center led by Oak Ridge National Lab, one of the five quantum centers recently funded by DoE. As part of this effort, our lab will be developing superconducting circuits and qubit-based sensors for probing quantum materials, materials defects, and excitations. This is a highly collaborative effort and we are looking for motivated, hardworking postdoc and students to join the team.
Lab Updates - Aug 2020
Our lab renovation will be finished soon, finally:)
We received our Bluefors dilution fridge back in March, although the installation has been postponed due to the covid pandemic. We are now waiting to move into the new lab first, and then attempt to install the fridge ourselves with remote assistance from Bluefors, FUN!
We also recently received our new e-beam evaporator from Plassys dedicated to our superconducting Josephson junction fabrication. The Plassys evaporator will be housed in the cleanroom at Purdue’s Birck Nanotechnology Center. We will try installing the system with the help of our Birck engineers and remote assistance from Plassys. Doubly FUN…
Our team has been mostly working from home since March. We have implemented a detailed Covid SOP for returning to research labs. We are now slowly ramping up our experimental efforts, following university and CDC guidelines. Fingers crossed for a safe and productive fall semester for everyone!

Congrats Mackenzie & Gozde on their summer research scholarships!
This past summer, two of our lab members received undergraduate research scholarships. Congratulations and well done!
Mackenzie received an REU scholarship from the Ohio State University, working (remotely) at OSU’s Center for Emergent Materials;
Gozde received the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) from Purdue to work in our own lab;
Jeremy and Botao served as SURF graduate mentors
First cool down / cold cavity
Installed new microwave lines to Prof. Yong Chen’s Bluefors dilution fridge, and the first cool down is a success! Hey, that’s a superconducting cavity right there:-) Good job @Botao @Maaz @Boyi
Team travels to MCAW 2019
The team travels to Chicago to attend the Midwest Cold Atom Workshop (MCAW 2019) at Northwestern University. Alex gives a short talk. Team visits the Simon and Schuster labs at UChicago!
How did we forget to take a group selfie??!
Two more new members
Botao joins the lab as a graduate student, and Maaz joins as an undergrad, welcome!! :)
Welcome new members!
Miguel and Guga join the lab as graduate students; Mackenzie and Lingxue join as undergraduates. Welcome to the team!
Check out our future lab space!
Our lab will be Room G041 in the Physics building.
Alex visits the lab space, and sets up vibration and magnetic fields monitors. Design and renovations to follow, EXCITING!
